DAY ONE: Hike to Camp Muir.
Camp Muir facilities: Hut and cook shack for up to 36 commercial clients and guides; stone walled public shelter for up to 25 climbers (first come, first served; be aware that both huts can be smelly and noisy); ranger hut; dispersed tent spaces; three composting toilets. Maximum nightly visitors: 110.
Camping options: Tent spaces for 36 people below Camp Muir on Muir Snowfield (starting above Pebble Creek and rising to 9,800 feet); tent spaces for 36 people on Ingraham Flats (on Ingraham Glacier at 11,100 feet, 1,020 feet closer to the summit, resulting in a shorter summit day). All campers at all sites must have a wilderness camping permit. Tent campers should camp on snow.
Potential hazards: Sustained uphill march with a heavy backpack; steep ascents on snow or ice; falling rock or ice; deep crevasses; snow bridges that can weaken in the afternoon hours of warm days; weather that can change swiftly and unexp |
