Description: | Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that occurs in 3% of the population and affects people of all demographics. Epilepsy is characterized by reoccurring seizures – an excessive, synchronous electrical discharge of a population of neurons in the brain. High variability in phenotypes and the myriad of causes including high body temperature, physical injury and genetic abnormalities have made understanding the mechanism, predicting outcomes, and developing treatments a considerable challenge. The causes of epilepsy in >30% of patients are unknown, but believed to be genetic in origin. We believe that developing a complex three-dimensional in vitro neural system utilizing human cells will enable researchers to address the significant gap in our understanding of how specific genetic mutations change neural electrical activity and network formation in epileptic brain tissue overtime.
